I have waxed poetic about Scharffen Berger chocolate before; and I don't know if I've mentioned it, but I am NOT a Hershey's chocolate fan. Hershey bars are the only chocolate that belongs on a S'more. If they are not on said yummy marshmallow campfire treat, however, they are yucky. Here is the cause of my current distress:
Hershey to Buy Scharffen Berger 07.25.2005, 06:53 PM
Snack food firm Hershey Company on Monday said it has agreed to acquire premium dark chocolate manufacturer Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Based in Berkeley, Calif., Scharffen Berger is known for its high-cacao content, signature dark chocolate bars and baking products sold online and at specialty retailers. Scharffen Berger also owns and operates three specialty stores in New York, Berkeley, and San Francisco. "The premium chocolate segment represents a strategic opportunity for Hershey based on increasing consumer demand for distinctive, high-end chocolate and for the antioxidant benefits of dark chocolate," said Richard H. Lenny, chairman, president and chief executive, in a statement. Hershey said it expects the acquisition, which is subject to the customary closing conditions, to be completed during the third quarter. Shares of Hershey fell 23 cents to close at $62.75 on the New York Stock Exchange.
This cannot be good.
Let's hope they don't change anything. Schaffen Berger also makes milk chocolate that is superb!
