Crap.

The texture is wrong. They are not deliciously crunchy. They aren't "pickle-y". They look pretty, but I am disappointed. Sigh.

I will try again, but right now I need to sew.

  1. Ok...so I guess I don't think of them as being crunchy...not like Klaussen pickes as compared to Vlassic pickles crunchy.

And I don't think of them as pickley because they aren't dill. LOL.

BUT I will see the queens of watermelon pickles (as I know them) this weekend and I will see if they have any advice.

  2. My mom used to make these when I was a kid. I love watermelon, and I remember liking these too, but they were never crunchy either. But they were good.

A number of years ago, I watched a PBS show on North Dakota. And the ladies they were following made these pickles and I remember thinking they were decidedly different from what I knew of.

I can't remember what herbs they used. But I do remember the lady was going to cross the border and enter a Minnesota County fair. Spreading her watermelon pickle pride.

  3. I'm not sure this is it, but it looks interesting.

I remember the young woman making a snarkey comment that the people in Minnesota ate sweet watermelon pickles and the ladies in the kitchen helping with her award winning recipe were disgusted.

I'd like to see that show again. I was much amused.

  4. Well, I'm an Iowan, and the reigning queens of watermelon pickles I know are an Iowan and a transplanted Minnesotan.

I would say that the pickles I've had are more tangy/spicy with a bit of sweetness. It's kind of a hard flavor to describe but well...vinegar, sugar, cinnamon, cloves.
